Under the guise of a “green economy,” many of the world’s largest corporations and most powerful governments are touting new technologies such as geo-engineering, synthetic biology, nanotechnology, agrofuels and genetically engineered plants and trees as a quick-fix for climate crisis and the key to our planet’s survival. In the absence of technology assessment, public debate and regulatory oversight, techno-fixes will provide false and high-risk solutions to climate change. The technology-will-fix-it mentality also poses a dangerous distraction from the urgent task of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and over-consumption of finite resources. This section provides examples of techno-fixes and their potential impacts.
